Where and When: Brisbane 1950s
by Terry Stafford
Like many of our ilk, we were from working class families and luckily, didn’t have the problems of todays youth with drugs , pornography and violence....Am happy to enjoy the vice of our days, I.e. good old XXXX.
Being raised at hawthorne , balmoral and close by Bulimba we were in blue collar areas with so many meat workers or wharfies in our midst.. Now look at these areas where it costs the earth to buy property.
And a few memories of sporting activities at SLC ....Despite being a so called good athlete, I had to borrow gear to wear at carnivals. From memory , I think I wore John Sullivans track suit and someone elses other gear for athletics..
Yep , money was tight in those days..
In 1959 I was the under 16 State mile champion at the carnival held at Lang Park and although I represented the College, I never received acknowledgement from the school. My Queensland blue I donated to the college archives.
